Picture this scenario. You have just downloaded this kick-ass video from the interwebs. You wait for hours for the video to download and upon trying to play the video you realize that your system doesn’t have the proper codec. Damn it!!! You do some research, with arcane error codes as your only clues to help you figure out what codec you need. You manage to find the proper video codec and try to watch the video but there is no sound. WTF!!! You do some more research and somehow manage to find the audio codec. What should have been a relatively painless activity, watching a video, becomes a tedious chore. And the kicker is that, given the nature of internet video downloads, this won’t be the last codec you will be hunting down. But fear not, if you are a Windows user, the open source ffdshow filter is here to save the day. ffdshow is a DirectShow and VfW filter for decoding a multitude of video and audio formats, including DivX, Xvid, and H.264. All versions of Windows including Windows Vista are supported. Once ffdshow is installed, any playback software that supports DirectShow filters will be able to use the ffdshow filters. This includes Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center.
