The Java Desktop team has been hard at work on the SceneGraph API. It is still work in progress, but there are lots of new things being added to it, and the latest is the Effects Framework API for SceneGraph. Check out this JNLP demo here. If you have Java 6 Update N pre-release installed on your machine, then the UI effects are all hardware accelerated by your GPU! Very cool! For more details on this Effects Framework and demos, check out Chris Campbell’s blog post.

There are a lot of great things on the horizon for desktop Java, and I can’t wait until these new JavaFX APIs are released and are stable enough to use in production apps . I will be sure to review them on developerlife as these APIs mature a bit more. Stay tuned!
